I have been reading a few posts about this and wanted to add my .02
I have two boys. One is an overachiever in the pack, the other is quite
happy doing exactly what the other boys do.
In the past our pack did not let boys begin to work on their next rank until
the start of the new school year, even though they graduated in May
(something we have since made sure was changed) However even when my oldest
had to wait until Aug-Sept he still always seemed to make rank in Oct. I do
not push my boys to make rank or anything else. He is now a 2nd year
Web....the only things he needs to get arrow of light is to go camping with
the troop and go to a meeting. In the meantime he has earned all of his
ranks, 10 arrow points in Wolf, 8 arrow points in Bear, a total of 20
different belt loops, his religious knot and his conservation award. My
younger son (now a 1st yr. Web) has made rank and earned 4 arrow points in
Wolf, 6 in Bear, and 14 belt loops.
It depends on the child and the family. I would say let him make rank and
give him other avenues to explore. There are many things that he can try
out and earn achievments for that will keep him occupied.
I have however seen some very competitive parents. When I was a DL we had
parents that would look at the Advancement Chart as soon as they came in to
compare how their son was. If their son was behind I would hear them tell
their sons that they were going to be working their tails off to get more
achievments done before the next meeting. All of the boys were progressing
along just fine. They were having fun, each working at their own pace, but
the parents made it a race. I sat down and explained to the parents that
they were not to do that any more and tried to explain why, and how much
more their boys could get out of the program if they would allow them to
enjoy it. After that I only had one parent who continued to do that. She
was also the one that had her husband make her sons Pinewood Derby car and
would question anything that another boy had earned that hers hadn't.
ok...so that was more like .10 instead of .02.
