Re: Using family vacation for camp

Several of the camps where I either camped or staffed, had family camp
programs. While the leader camped with his/her unit, the families were
able to take advantage of a family camp area elsewhere on the camp. At
Tomahawk Scout Camp (Indianhead Council) they even had a "family island"
director. When I was there she was the school teacher wife of a staff
member. One camp even rented cabins to families. The "family circle"
area was used for married staff with any open cabins available for families
of unit leaders. Most summers there were a couple of cabins a week open
and that seemed to meet most needs.

Sometimes I heard concerns about leaders leaving their units to be with
their families but this didn't appear to be a problem. Families often ate
dinner in the dining hall with the scouts and had a special time when they
could use the pool for a swim.
