Re: Too many patches

Lou Ann Walker asked about multiple quality unit patches on a uniform:

One of the ways to tell a person they are not correct is to tell others
that they are. When I conduct inspections, I try to point out things
that are correct -- "I see Bill is wearing only his most current Quality
Unit patch. With all the QU patches his unit has earned, Bill could
probably fill a whole sleeve with them but the book says you should only
wear the most current." If the person with lots of QU patches has
something right, i.e., "I see you have your pack numerals right up against
the council patch. That's great."

Caveat: Depending on the mood of the group, I'll add "I'll skip your
right sleeve this time around." But, you have to be really careful on
that one.

Story: Several years ago, a local unit was revived and several boys from
another unit decided to transfer to the revived unit. After a few weeks
we reviewed proper uniforming and pointed out that you should wear the
current troop numbers and patrol medallions, etc. A couple of weeks later
I mentioned that we might have to bring some scissors the next meeting so
people could get rid of their outdated patches. Next week, all had been
removed except for one scout who continued to wear his old patrol patch.
I just ignored it. A couple of months later, we were talking about how
nice everyone looked and that they would probably all get 100s on an
inspection sheet, except for one scout who still wore his old patrol patch.
After the meeting, the scout approached me and said "You said you would be
cutting off our old patches for us. I left the patrol patch just for you
'cause I knew everyone else would take their own off!" The next week I
handed him a seam ripper. After he removed the old patrol patch, he took
his new one out of his pocket and pinned it in place with a big smile!!
